Electrical Muscle Stimulation
Electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) utilizes electrical current to elicit contraction of a single muscle or group of muscles. The desired muscle fibers can be recruited by placing electrodes on specific areas of the skin. The current can be controlled to allow for a gentle or more forceful contraction, dependent upon what is comfortable for the patient as well as what is the most therapeutic. EMS is utilized to increase muscle strength, prevent muscle atrophy, control inflammation, as well as increase blood flow into the desired area to assist in tissue healing.

Ultrasound

Ultrasound is an adjunctive treatment that utilizes high or low frequency sound waves to elicit a therapeutic effect. These sound waves penetrate into the muscles to cause deep tissue/muscle warming. This promotes tissue relaxation and is useful in treating muscle spasm and tissue injury. The sound waves also cause blood vessels to dilate, increasing blood flow into the desired region, resulting in an increased rate of tissue healing. The frequency of the sound waves can also be altered to facilitate a decrease in inflammation.

Acupuncture
Acupuncture originated in China over 5,000 years ago. It is a form of traditional Chinese medicine that is based on the premise that vital energy, called qi, circulates in the body through many pathways, called meridians. Normal flow of qi results in good health. When an imbalance in the flow of qi within a meridian exists, disease begins. Although there are many meridians that have been identified in the body, there are only twelve principle meridians that are utilized in treatment in traditional Chinese medicine.

Each meridian is associated with a different organ system. Needles are inserted into specified points along meridian lines to influence the restoration and balance of the flow of qi. Acupuncture has been time tested over thousands of years and continues to be validated today. In 1997, the National Institutes of Health released a consensus statement endorsing acupuncture for the treatment of a variety of conditions such as post-operative pain, tennis elbow, and carpal tunnel syndrome.

Graston Technique®
The Graston Technique®, originally developed by athletes, is changing the way clinicians — including athletic trainers, chiropractors, physical therapists, occupational therapists — and patients view treatment of acute and chronic soft tissue injuries.

Graston Technique® is an innovative, patented form of instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization that enables clinicians to effectively break down scar tissue and fascial restrictions. The Technique utilizes specially designed stainless steel instruments to specifically detect and effectively treat areas exhibiting soft tissue fibrosis or chronic inflammation.

Simply stated, we are what we eat, what we absorb, and what we have the ability to excrete. Food has a profound effect on our well-being. Food can help promote good health and vitality, but it can also promote chronic diseases such as cancer, diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure. Foods can facilitate systemic inflammation and an acidic body chemistry which can affect the perception of pain. Food can also affect if our immune system functions efficiently or poorly. What effect food has on an individual is dependant upon what type of food that individual consumes. Foods that are high in trans-fats, simple refined sugars, and/or are highly processed, typically are the type of foods that fall into the category that promote disease, or at the minimum, provide limited health benefit. Unfortunately, the vast majority of our society eat this way, and either do not know it, or refuse to acknowledge it. The data demonstrates this. According to the CDC, in 2008, thirty-two states had an obesity rate of 25% or greater, and only one (Colorado) has an obesity rate under 20%. That is one out of every four people being obese!! According to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in 2003-2004, 66.2% of Americans are either overweight or obese. This is two in every three people that has an unhealthy body composition!! Food, along with exercise, needs to be considered our primary preventative medicine.

What is of more concern is the diets of young children. Eighty percent of an individual’s neurological development takes place in the first three years of their life. It takes the first two to three years of one’s life to develop a mature functioning immune system. Studies have shown that future dietary habits as adults can be influenced by how we eat as children. This is why it is imperative for our children to be exposed to high nutrient density foods the vast majority of the time, if not exclusively, especially during the first years of life.
