Chiropractic is a health care science based on the basic premise that structure is related to function. Chiropractic physicians focus on the treatment of structural dysfunction within the human body, especially the spine, because of the potential impact of dysfunction on the nervous system. The nervous system is the primary regulator of balance, also known as “homeostasis”, within the human body. Disruption of or stress to this balance can lead to disease or pathology.
Chiropractic is a holistic and patient-centered health care science whose basic premise is to try to help restore balance or “homeostasis” within the human body.
Chiropractic Manipulation Therapy, sometimes referred to as “Adjusting”, is specific to treating motion dysfunction in joints within the body. Some Chiropractic Physicians will refer to “Adjusting” abnormal motion within the spine as “Putting it back into place” or “Putting it back into alignment”. Joints within the human body contain a vast supply of various types of nerve fibers. Specific to the spinal column, various structures, such as the intervertebral discs, the facet joints, as well as various ligaments, are supplied with nerves. When joints function through normal ranges of motion, these nerves are stimulated in a positive manner. When alteration of normal motion occurs, nerves are stimulated in a negative manner, which is termed “dysafferentiation”. Chiropractic physicians focus on restoring normal biomechanics to dysfunctional joints through various techniques.
